The Houston Rockets' 7'2 center from Congo Dikembe Mutombo is contemplating on returning for another "last season" next year according to reports. He's been rarely used by the team so far this season but now figures heavily on the rotation with Yao Ming's recent foot injury. Behind Mutombo, there's nobody else to fill up the center position except perhaps Steve Novak and starting power forward Luis Scola. Mutombo is already 41 years old and was thought to be done with his career last year, until he decided in the offseason to continue playing for the Houston Rockets. He's doing the same thing this year. I'm personally thinking that he's leaning more towards a possible retirement, but he's being urged by the team's staff (Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and coach Rick Adelman) as well as teammates (Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming) to stay and play another season. In the end, though, it's apparent that there's his wish to be done with his career once and for all. "... I don't know why everybody wants me to stay. I wonder to myself, when will I go home," Mutombo was quoted saying.

Well... we will see how worn out he becomes now that he will receive extended minutes with Yao being out with a stress fracture. Logging heavy minutes in the regular season and then possibly the post season.. that may take a toll on his ancient basketball body.

It is extremely important right now for the Houston Rockets to get another center from the free agency, such as Dale Davis. It doesn't matter so much that they get someone with a lot of quality for the position, just someone who can be efficient down the block and who can help rest Dikembe Mutombo and his peers at the four and five positions. We are all aware of Mutombo's age and how he can probably no longer sustain extended minutes on the floor and it should probably be one of the Rockets' main concerns to get him the back-up help he desperately needs right now.
