Have you ever met a cancer patient

Being a Med-student I get to meet many different kinds of people with curable and uncurable diseases,one of which is cancer.My grandmother died of cancer and there was nothing we could do about it.I know how it starts and how it can be stopped at an early stage but once it becomes chronic nothing can be done.It's really annoying and depressing when even after I belong to a field that should be able to cure people I'm not able to.All you can tell them is to live the rest of their days happily.It really sucks saying that.Any of you had experiences like mine or maybe you want to share something similar?
