Buying yarn in bulk

How do you buy the yarn for your projects? Do you plan a project then go and buy just what you need to achieve this, or do you pick up yarn whenever it takes your eye, particularly bargain yarns, or do you buy in 'trade' sized bulk packs so you have a huge amount in stock? I tend to pick up bargains whenever I see them, but recently I've started using just a few yarns in large quantities, so I buy from the trade depatment of the supplier, it means I have to buy in very large amounts, but the savings are well worth it. What about you?

If I have a project in mind, like you, I will buy in bulk...but so often, I will fall in love with a yarn, then have to come up with a project for it. If I find acrylic yarn in "ecru" (off white) I will buy tons of it, as I always have a grow blanket on the go. Over the years, I have knit, or added to many, many grow blankets. But I can get out of hand with yarn buying! I just donated 3 garbage bags full to a senior's circle who are knitting hats/mitts for the needy. Please tell, what is the "trade department"...?

The trade department is the part of a company that deals with wholesdale orders. Often they specify a minimum purchase, it can be £100 or it might be 25 kilos, but whatever it is, its usually at least a third cheaper than paying shop prices.

well i usually just buy one or two rolls of the yarn that i need even if i know that i will eventually need more of that same yarn although i probably need to buy the yarn in bulk and buy as many rolls as i think i will need for my project because i am always afraid that they will stop carrying the yarn that i need i usually do not plan out the knitting projects before i buy the yarn i usually go to the store and find yarn and think "oh this would make a good sweater...or scarf...or whatever else" i always try to pick up bargans also

I tend to do both, i do buy in bulk if it's cheap. But sometimes i buy the wool to go with the project that i'm going to do. There are some amazing wools and the colours are amazing these days aren't they. What is your favourite wool that you like to use?
