Receiving a Picture on 27" Toshiba Television

I am trying to receive on my 27" Toshiba in order to use my D V D without a cable connection. I am not successful in getting a picture. I am thinking that there is some minor adjustment that I have to make but with no Operating manual, I am lost. Does any one have any suggestions?
