Does IPhone really need to be Crack in order to use it?

Iphone is getting more and more famous with the sleek design and functions. I've thought of getting one for myself but I'm not sure if we need to Crack it or anything in order to use it? As I've read a few forums discussing this issue about people trying to crack it.. Will function better after doing the Crack? Have any of you tried to Crack it and it functions well? Can I use it without cracking it? What is the real motive of performing the crack? Are there any Fake Iphones and how to differentiate between the original genuine Iphone?
