How do you feel about song covers?

I'll be the first to admit that I listen to my favorite songs over and over to the point of obsession. I recently stumbled on Reel Big Fish's "Take on Me", a cover of the A-Ha song, and I know one of my favorites, Lifehouse, play covers in concert all the time. How do you feel when songs you've listened to for ages before are covered by a new band? Does it make a difference if you've heard the song by an artist before and have already associated that song with the artist in question? Many times I've thought that the covers sounded better than the originals! :) If anyone has any suggestions as to song covers I should listen to as well, please let me know!

A local radio station here just had an "Undercover weekend"... all weekend they play song covers...some are good and some you wonder what they were thinking. I like covers that Joe Cocker has recorded...he's pretty much the only one who can cover Beatles songs...most others annoy me. I love Peter Gabriel and Frank Sinatra too much too to listen to covers of their songs. Two that come to mind that I like are the Counting Crows cover of Big Yellow Taxi and Hazy Shade of Winter--the Bangles cover Simon and Garfunkel. I also like James Taylor's many covers.

They tell me that someone is lacking in originality.

I feel that a newer artist's take on a song is both nostalgic and refreshing. Some song covers take me back to certain moments in my life and then I tend to reminisce. Other song covers, those that are not associated to any particular event in my life, I appreciate and enjoy the newer artist's version as much as the previous version.

It depends on the song and the artist that does it. Daughtry covered Sunday Bloody Sunday sung originally by U2 and I really loved it. I also really enjoyed Simple Man redone by Shinedown.
