How to promote my site

How does a site rank near the top in google search? Has it got something to do with the number of hits the site gets? If my
site is not near the top, how will it get hits,and if it doesn't get hits ,how will it get near the top?
And also, how do I generate good keywords?should I use keywords in my text of my headings?

Look for Search Engine Optmisation tips online. Basiclaly your content must be of good quality and your meta tags should be appropriate and related to your site.
More than hits what you need is other quality sites to link to your site through the keywords or title of site you are aiming for. For example if you are a webhost - you need a link on other sites with a text like "Qhost - cheap, high quality hosting with MySQL"
Never spam your link but do post it in relevant blogs and forums.

getting top in the search engine results is not that easy you need to have good content with good number of keywords and need to have good feeds on your site or blog.to get feeds into your site hear is a link whic might help you.
