Does anyone know how to get rid of gophers?

My mom, who lives out in the country, has a gopher problem and it's driving her up the wall. She has set traps and caught a few. But she really doesn't like setting traps up because of her black lab. She's afraid that her dog will get caught in them. The bad thing is that the gophers dig under her house. I'm not sure if they've gotten into her basement or not. Someone told her to set out bowls of ammonia, but then there's her dog. :/ So, if anyone knows how to get rid of gophers - or what could possibly be attracting them to her house I'd love to hear it. She is desperate! Thanks!

My mother had the same problem. She was told to cut onions in half and put them in all the holes she can see. I guess it worked , her lawn looks very nice now. Can't hurt to try it, the onions won't hurt the dog and a bag of onions is very cheap.

Thank you cupoftea! I will definitely tell my mom about your idea of cutting up onions and putting them in their holes. Not sure if she can find them since she lives on 3 acres. But perhaps just setting onions around her house would work? Although it might make her house smell. That would be funny. :-)

Gophers eat onions. Try gopherout. It repels them naturally and is the only product verified by outside services. www.gopherout.com

You could try putting those windmill things in your yard, you know like the bird who arm twirls in the wind, etc., You should be able to get them at wal-mart or target right now since it is getting to be spring. They vibrate the ground which the gophers don't like. I have never try this myself, but someone told me it would work--and I believe my grandmother tried it and it worked for her. Its worth a shot!

I'm not sure a windmill would work. She'd have to get quite a few as she lives on 3 acres and more land around her. But, I will definitely mention it to her because you just never know!

I have had a problem with them too. What I have learned it to find the hole and put around 6 moth balls in it and then fill it in. they hate the odor. If you can fill alot of the holes then they will go some place else to dig. It might take a couple of weeks but just be as stubborn as they are and you can win. Good luck, Cheryl

Try gopherout at www.gopherout.com. I tried everything and this product worked. It's also verified by an outside certification company.
