Essential oils for kittys?

Does any of you put essential oils on your cats? I just read an article that said that kitty's rub the flowers to get the smells and that using essential oils can be as therapeutic in aroma therapy for our kittys as they are for us and our moods. I have never thought of this, but it makes sense. I have a cat that loves to smell my daughter arm pit. He knits and rubs. Not sure what he is getting there, but he is content.

I dont put anything on my cats.. except for antlers at Christmas, and Bunny Ears at Easter.. haha. I think its odd, some of the smells that turn them on. My oldest cat likes to sniff vitamins in bottles. She also loves to stick her head in my old slippers.. EW!

Happy Easter and tomorrow we know what your cats will be wearing or should I say you will have Easter Bunnies. I remember using Mentholatum one time and my cat went crazy. thanks for responding.

You want to be careful what you put on your cat as they will ingest whatever you put on their fur when they clean themselves. I don't put anything on my cats for that very reason. Make you you research the oil before you apply it to your kitty to make sure its not toxic it to her. I would also suggest not putting a lot of it on her as it might make her sick. One thing you can do is get a paper bag and put either catnip or a drop or two of vanilla in it. They kitty will love the smell and the sound and enclosure of the paper bag. My kitties always have an excellent time when we give them a paper bag like that!

Thanks, I have one cat that likes bag or box without anything. This is a neat idea.

Hi Shell I might put something on them (cats/dogs/horses/animals) if they had a sore spot or needed treatment but on the most part they can roll or rub what they want and I guess I think if it's not broken don't fix it! I have found I do not do well with some of the oils. I was smelling them at a shop downtown before it closes and almost passed out from it..got all hot then cold and felt like I was going to throw up.. so I use only tea-tree and lavender and the lavender has to be very very diluted for me and at Christmas time when they have the cinnamon smelling brooms and cones I get so sick feeling..I think it's just too rich or something...Maybe I'm just odd! lol Oh but I do love vanilla and coconut and could roll in those..he he xoxoxxoxoxoxxo

Given just how sensitive the cat's respiratory system is, I wouldn't be putting any kind of oils on my cat. You'd be surprised at how many people think tea tree oil is safe for cats...yeah, then their cats are in the vet's office. (Note: It's only safe when heavily diluted and used in small amounts.) I'm all for natural courses and such, but with cats you have to be EXTREMELY careful.

I talked with a vet one time that made salves and he said any salve only need be 6% Tea Tree. That is a tiny amount. Thanks for answering.
