I hope this discussion is not about forming a server... rather if it's possible to configure it into a laptop or not.. my answer is NO. Because I don't think it's possible to switch on a laptop in 24 X 7 for a long time (like few years..). If you shut it down everyday for some times your users wouldn't be able to use your sites for that time which is not desirable. Anyway , it's possible to configure a server in a laptop.. no problem about it.. you may use apache tomcat (http://tomcat.apache.org/) or glassfish (https://glassfish.dev.java.net//) for that purpose.

Overheating is a good point. The software can be a server but just the configuration of the hardware.

Any computer can act as a server , it all depends on what kind of server and how much power. What kind of server are you talking about? Web Server for hosting? Or are you talking about a network server. Keep in mind if your doing a web server , it will have to be on 24/7 without crashing. It all depends on what your going for. If you want web server , go with ubuntu server. Its one of the best free OS out there. What kind of laptop are we talking about? What are the specs?

yes but i doubt it if it can be as durable as the real servers, why use a laptop as a server when you can use and buy a server that fits its purpose....
