I want to buy a ps2. So, have several questions: 1. if i buy a 5 year old fat ps2 (old version) can it play the current ps2 game? 2. does this fat version is inferior in any way compare to the slim ps2? 3. anything that I need to know before I buy a ps2 console? please answer...

PlayStation 2 Fat and Slim - These are the two versions of the PlayStation 2 consoles.

The Fat which has an expansion bay and a disk tray that slides out. The slim, without expansion bay and pop open disk cover.
For me, the first released version of the PlayStation 2 is more better compared to the slim version that followed. For one thing, the slim version doesn't have the expansion bay that the first version had. There are modifications that can be done with the first version that includes a hard disk drive and network adapter, depends on compatibility though. The slim version can also do that, however, through a USB connection. Well, the first version can still run current game titles for the PlayStation 2, no doubt about it. We have one and its still running as much as the slim version. What I heard about the slim version, though it is conveniently space savey, it over heats quickly so you are forced to purchase that accessory that connects as an additional exhaust fan.

thanks for a thorough response. it is clearer to me now. in term of performance, does the slim ps2 (new version) perform better than the fat one (old version) ?

I think, well its just my opinion, that the Fat version has more endurance compared to a quick over heating Slim version of the PlaySation 2. I don't know why. Maybe the components are too tightly compact that long periods of gaming heats them up, having collective heat results to over heating while the Fat version, having spacious set up makes it last longer? That's just what I think.. not really sure. Its just my choice for the Fat version, endurance as well as upgrade possibility, even though both console version can still play early or lately released game titles on the PlayStation 2.

I already own PS2 fat type since launch second version (after first version using DVD for reset). I think is almost 5 years and still working. A lot of time my machine running for 16 to 18hours. No problem happen because theres cooling fan built inside the machine and quite robust because 3 times drop from TV cabinet. But recently theres some problem, sometimes the machine can't load certain game. But it will be OK if I sent for servicing. The spare more expensive than slim version. For the slim version I heard from my friends that he got problem with heat if play more than 4 hours but theres fan out there u can attached to the machine to solve the problem. The other thing is u must be very careful when insert the DVD game some issue I heard that something below the DVD plate broken esspecially if kid handle the machine. But the good thing is there some improvement on reading speed that you can load faster than old version.

The fat console is better if you want to get one that you can repair easy if there is a disc read error. The ps2 slim doesnt have as much problems as the fat ps2. i would choose a ps2 fat model cause there are many around that you can buy cheap to repair for 20$. living in florida you have flea markets and you find many that fat models that are broke for under 30.
