I'd first of all thank all and sandry who in one way or another helped me out of my computer crisis. i've been able to track down the problems hindering the speed of the computer. However, i was doing defragmentation when i realised i've lost some important decuments and other programmes i've not back up. so i did retored the system back to it's previous state. i've got a dictionary on it and some other programmes on the desk top which i want to back up. when i browse to see the desk top documents and programmes, the dictionary and another game don't appear there. i don't know how to include them so that i can back up all. once again your views are warmly and cordially invited. thanks lol.

I preserve my programs and settings by backing up the entire operating system. This is called drive imaging. I can back everything up to an encrypted partition, or to a file on a separate drive or partition, in which case the file can later be burned to optical discs. With these on hand, I can even restore Windows if the hard drive fails and has to be replaced. The undisputed leader of this industry is Acronis True Image, and they're having a promotion right now. If you hurry up and register, you can get yourself a licensed copy of version 8 for free! Get it here: http://www.acronis.co.uk/mag/pcpro/ati8pe It's up to you how you go about backing up Windows, but one thing that helps to keep the size of the image down is to store all your data files on a partition other than the active partition (usually C:). If you know how to create a separate partition on your hard drive, here's how you can move your My Documents folder: http://www.techsupportalert.com/how_to_move_my_documents.htm Hope this helps!

Fred, maybe you can try Recuva. Thats a recovery program for deleted or lost programs. Nothing is guaranteed, but its worth a try. http://www.recuva.com/

You can just copy them or write them to DVD, or get an external harddrive and copy your things to there. *ah-ha moment* I think I'm getting what's going on. You are copying the shortcuts which are located on the desktops. That won't back up your programs. You have to go to C:\program files and then select the folder of the programs you want to back up. Copy them to a DVD or to an external harddrive (like moving a folder). If some programs aren't in Program files, you'll have to run a search for where their .exe files are. When you find them, copy them to DVD. Sorry about the confusion, but I read that some programs/files were lost.

just copy from desktop and paste in the desired location to be backed up! when trying to check the items on the desktop check whether the location specified in correct, you might be having multiple users and checking other desktops...
