What do you do to people who have something smart to say?

I must admit, this is one of those things that irritates me. The way I respond usually depends on what type of day I'm having. If the day is good, I'll say something along the lines of "Why would you say something like that?", if the day is only okay, I'll say"I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood, because you couldn't have said what I think you said?". If my day is going badly or if I'm at the end of my patience, I'll say something like "That's really clever, did you think that one up on your own?". Smart alec remarks are a form of passive aggressiveness, and I prefer not to deal with that sort of behavior. I have noticed I usually get one of three responses from these people, either uncomfortable silence, they'll respond with "What's the matter can't you take a joke?" to which you respond "In my experience, jokes are funny", or they'll try to turn it around and say "You don't have to be so sensitive" to which you reply "of course, it must be me" in a tone that says we both know what's going on here. Either way, the smart alec remarks will stop around you! It's the same as dealing with intrusive questions - simply ask "Why on earth would you want to know that?". People who are rude can not stand being called on their behavior and quickly halt the offensive behavior if you say something about it each and every time. Don't be insecure, if you want to learn be around with the smart people, just learn from their ideas. There's no big deal about that, the problem is what you think.
