asking before buying presents

When someones birthday is coming up or say it is Christmas do you ask the person what they want or do you just buy them a present without asking them?

If possible, I will ask the person what they want, then I'll buy the present. If not, I will just buy any present that I think is usable to them. It's a present, so I think the other person won't mind whatever present that they will receive.

If you are familiar with your friend,you can buy a present what he need.If he is a new friend,you can make fun of about what her want to need.
