Do you think the U.S. needs more nuclear weapons?

Don't we already have enough to destroy the world twice over? Do we need to spend more money on eliminating lives that we could spend on enhancing the quality of lives? I got an email today that says the Bush administration is trying to reboot the nuclear weapons production: Council for a Livable World is pleased to partner with our fellow advocacy organization, Physicians for Social Responsibility, in opposing the rebuilding of America's nuclear weapons production complex. Tell the Department of Energy (DOE) the U.S. does not need new nuclear weapons. Join PSR doctors who are speaking out at DOE public hearings across the country about the dangers to human life and health posed by the Bush Administration's plan to rebuild the U.S. nuclear weapons production complex in order to produce large numbers of new nuclear weapons into the indefinite future. The general public has a chance to respond to this so-called "Complex Transformation" plan. Tell the DOE the U.S. doesn't need a new "bombplex" to build new nuclear weapons. Click here to learn more. Sincerely, Michael McCally, M.D., Ph.D. Executive Director Physicians for Social Responsibility the link is http://www.psr.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ComplexTransformations_LearnMore

The last thing any country needs is nuclear weapons. Wars used to be fought with simple weapons the would only wipe out a few people, what can't wars be fought that way? I am not for war, but Hell, if wars are going to be fought, then why not fight them the old-fashioned way? Having nuclear weapons is insane. Who really wants to wipe out the whole world? No country, the U.S. included, should have nuclear weapons.

Luckily US is no longer big brother in the internatonal arena. There are countries which are equivalent or little shorter than in US in money/research/economy. Chances are US may be relegated to No.2 or 3 position in a decade. US has not been given power (or really has no power) to destroy the world. When it comes to using such a power, there are several countries which can cause similar dstruction to the US. US may be thinking of 1960-1990s, where they can sell their weaponry including nuclear warheads to poor or developing countries so make money. Now it no longer holds good.

If they build more and more nuclear power, I just don't know who will invase US to bring them democracy or to take that kind of weapons off. As you already know, US has attacked many countries and always found some reasons like that but when it comes to US there is nothing. This makes me really sad because whenever they want to attack somewhere they will create a reason and most of the people will believe that without question. Personally, I am not feeling safe in my country because they might find a reason for my country too and we really won't have a chance to tell the truth to the world as US will have already said some "Democracy bringing" "Destroying mass destruction weapons" reasons even if we don't have any. but how could you explain..

I'm a US citizen and I agree with you on many points. Our government seems to function with a double standard. Just who are we to determine who should or shouldn't have weapons or who should or shouldn't have a democracy? I, too, think that those are used as excuses to get access to something those countries have that the US wants. It is appalling to me. Our only hope is that the leaders will change and the people will speak up to make our wishes known.

In a way I want to answer no to this question, but I'm going to be realistic.. We don't know what the hell other countries have waiting for us. So obviously to look out for our own arses we need more of everything.. Kipani..

I don't think any country in the world needs more nuclear weapons. I think the world has enough weapons as it is. I'm really really sick and tired of war, war, war, and more war. It's about time we all stopped fighting.

I think Bush is a controversial president and if i ever has the chance i'll never support any president who may like to continue with his policies. in fact, i support him going to war with Iraq at first because i thought he was justified that Iraq had neclear programme that was harmful to the peace of the world but not so. he threatens Iran and North Korea to destroy the neclear programmes or go to war with them. why? why? does he want to build a complex neclear? Does he antipate another world war or he wants to go to war with whom? I think he needs to be told boldly on the face that this will not bring peace if he's against what he now advocate for. isn't it time we stop the manufacture of war weapons? if America begins this other countries will also fellow suit. It's so much for Bush to be a war fashion and no peace loving president. he should have learnt from Cliton and others.

Honestly, I don't think anyone should have them, but if no one had them, then a rogue country would get them, and the other countries would have no leverage on them. Most smart people know, if one country let a bomb off, the other country would retaliate, and it'd turn into the third world war because it'd keep going back and forth until the entire planet was destroyed.

I think we have enough already in the US. I can't imagine why the government would think we need more.

I agree with you 100%! It is tragic how much money countries all over the word spend for weapons! With such an amount of money life of citizen could be much better!

nuclear weapons in todays world is all about telling your neighbor don't mess with be because I am nuclear power. why do you think Iran and North Korea are trying to develop nuclear waepons , they are both trying to prevent America and her friends from invading them. self preservation is their objective.

Who is the target? A very good question. Seems to me what is most dangerous to us is the fear that seems to permeate the media these days. We need to increasingly be aware of how we are all connected, not how we differ.
