Should this be grounds for disqualification?

My boyfriend sent me a text last night telling me that Carly Smithson used to be a recording artist before American Idol. So I did some research. Turns out that Carly Smithson isn't an unknown artist! She used to go by Carly Hennessy. Her debut album recieved $2 million dollars from MCA Records, it only sold less than 400 copies in 3 months, but still! This really isn't fair to all the other aspiring artists on Idol that are busting their butts off to make it in this business when they have someone like Carly who's very talented. After the research I did I do understand she's already mentioned her previous record deal on american idol, but I still don't think that this is fair. Do you believe she should be disqualified? Or atleast not allowed to make finalists? 'cause after getting this far she's made it clear she's capable of lasting this time now that she's made herself known.

Well, my dear, you have raised an interesting question, and as far as I can tell, it's a valid one. I think people with recording history should not be included. I thought this was a competition for fresh artists to compete for popularity. That's sad, too, because I like Carly. I vote for her. On the other hand, fair is fair. Her experience makes it easier for her while everyone else has little to no edge such as that(if that makes sense).

Thank you! I'm glad someone agrees with me. I mean I understand that since the producers had no problem with her having a history, then it really shouldn't be such a big deal to everyone else, right? But this girl has worked with Randy Jackson before, which is something that gets me 'cause if she was good enough to work with him, she shouldn't have been allowed. Clearly she's capable of making it on her own. I love her, I think she's awesome, but I hope she gets voted off. Now that she has her name really out there she can do better than the first album and give someone else a chance.

Hello! Well to be honest with you honey, I don't see a reason why they should have disqualified her (she did lose out of the season unfortunately). While I'm not saying I agree or not with you, the fast of the matter, she had told them when she entered. And I found out that there were OTHER people that had had record deals as well. American Idol accepts these people because they generally have good voices and make their show better. And did you even listen to her one album? Even though it did VERY terrible via sales, the songs are VERY good. I like her voice and songs a lot. Have a wonderful day. Pablo

As far as I know, American Idol is aware of this, as I have read and heard this before as well. They are saying because this was not made in the US, she is NEW here, so that is why she is allowed to perform on American Idol. To me, she is no IDOL, and it is up to people if they want her to win or not, but there is better singers than her this yr. for sure. But who knows... Is it fair? No!! But then if you ever figure out what is fair on American Idol, let me know.

I think the only rule is that they can't have a current contract with a recording industry. She's following the rules so I don't have a problem with it.

That is terrible. I think they should disqulify her myself if this is true. She's not one of my favorite American Idols anyhow.Sometimes she does alright but still.

Well,if she is not currently signed she has as much right to compete as anybody else.I dont feel she will end up winning anyway.

This issue has been around eversince Carly got that golden ticket to Hollywood... but she is not alone in that aspect... Kristy Lee Cook was also signed under the record label of Britney Spears in the past... even Robbie Carrico had a singing career prior to American Idol... but that sort of thing did not violate any AI rules... so that made the eligible for the contest...

If she has already mentioned it to American Idol then why should she be disqualified? She has as much right to be there as everyone else. Yes she made an album with MCA records but still as you said she already said that she has made that album. She as well is busting her butt to make it on American Idol just like the rest of them. There is no reason for disqualification against her.
