Can you connect a laptop to a desktop

I want to know if there is a way of connecting a laptop to a desktop. I barely have room on my laptop and they say I can't add more space, memory etc. What do I need to do???? Or is there an inexpensive way of having an external drive that you can save files to and I'm not talking about USB flash drive?
