Companies and employees....

Why is it that companies are cutting back more and more on what employees get? They are taking away more and more of the perks/benefits that employees used to take for granted. Employees are getting less raises and still doing the same amount of work if not more then they used to do. Other companies are cutting back on manpower which is adding to the stress of the employees working. What is the companies logic behind doing this? Is it to save money? What is your opinion on this?
