Odd Laws of Anime (Part 1?)

I saw a different discussion and got inspired. Plus I need some unwind time. Here are some odd laws of anime. I know some won't get it, but maybe you'll find something worth laughing about anyways. Some laws refer to the anime and characters, others just refer to the culture and media itself. So, without further delay... Laws made or broken by anime 1. The law of loners - A good number of times, the protagonist is a loner. Only has company by being tagged with unwillingly, or having a weird pet. Usually the loner learns they need others by the end of the anime, but a few times they don't. 2. The law of teams (Sentai rule) - Other times there is a team. With said team there is usually a headstrong leader, a jokester, a sexually questionable third, a stolid or removed fourth, sometimes a outright weird fifth 3. The law of teams: Part 2 (Ranger rule, Gundam rule) - Teams usually consist of 5 and most times have different colors denoting them or the machines they use 4. The law of male leads - Most male leads are either overgrown wusses, completely shutoff invalids or eccentric hooligans 5. The law of female leads - No matter what male lead you get, typically the female lead is soft spoken or otherwise not too remarkable. This law is clearly negated in action anime or harem/date animes (or anything Rumiko Takahashi created) 6. The law of female leads: part 2 (Shuffle! rule, Kurumi rule) - If you don't see the first set, you will either see female leads that are more masculine than the male leads, or an outright obnoxious female lead 7. The law of female leads: part 3 (Higurashi rule) - Cute girls may look nice and lovely, but the better they look and cuter they are, the more likely they'll be hurting or killing someone. 8. The law of supporting characters (Da Capo rule, ~Wind~ rule) - There will be a best friend character who is either better or MUCH worse than the protagonist, a childhood friend with a crush, an odd teacher, and/or some old person that gives you stuff for free, a creepy kid that got fired from Children of the Corn 9. The law of parenthood - Almost always, the parents are never there... having been killed or seperated from their offspring 10. The law of parenthood: part 2 (Harem rule, School anime rule) - Again, almost always the parents are never there, but other reasons include: (VERY)long business trips, helping out another family member, some major malfunction, they are currently playing the big yet obvious person in a mask, they are testing out the cloaking device being developed by Japanese scientists 11. The law of parenthood: part 3 (Urusei Yatsura rule) - If the parents ARE there, then chances are they have some sort of malfunction which would make anyone question why they are parents. So yes, even anime can reflect real life sometimes =P 12. The law of villains - Villains have deep or weird voices (many of them sound like Akuma from Street Fighter). There is also a vanity of hearing themselves talk. This is so bad, a lot of them talk for several episodes (even in fights) before they actually DO something. 13. The law of shady pasts - There is always a character, usually the protagonist, with a shady or dark past. 14. The law of shady pasts: part 2 - If the protagonist and/or supporting characters has a bad past, its revealed very slowly if they are a victim. Sometimes you have to wait until season 2 (or 3) to even figure it all out... 15. The law of shady pasts: part 3 - If the protagonist did something very bad in the past, its only revealed near the end of the season. 16. The law of shady pasts: part 4 - If the protagonist did something very bad in the past, they usually, and very strangely, get off with little or no punishment... 17. Law of weirdness - The weirder something sounds the more truthful it is. The more fantastic it is, the more likely it'll happen. The less scientific explanation there is, the more weirdness you will see. Don't be surprised to see children able to turn into adults, or beings capable of splitting the planet in half, or time travel, or a demon lord appearing in the sky on a nice spring day. 18. Law of weirdness part 2 (Its baroque stupid!) - Weird things in anime include: Multi colored hair which is impossible in real life unless you use dyes, even then the results are terrible. Spikey or other unusual hair styles which would take years to do or a lot of faking to pull off in real life People don't go around shoving each other, staring at each other weird and saying "you *ss!" (Oh wait... culture difference right? -_-) Some characters have a call sign found in their speech, ranging from saying "desu" alot, to saying "wa", to repeating the last word they said, to saying utter nonsense like "mipa!" 19. The law of flight - Characters find some way or some how to fly. It doesn't matter if its a powered suit, a mecha, magic, biological ability, life energy, or jetpack... people will fly. 20. Law of bypassing common sense (fighting) - Instead of having things settled by sword or gun battle, expect some differences (such as your safety, to the fate of the world): to be settled by card games, overgrown chess games, spinning top games, air surfing, gambling, and other nonsense 20. Law of Just SHOOT HIM ALREADY!!! - Refers to the previous law. During some awesome looking but really pointless duel, you have to wonder why the villains or the heroes don't just shoot their respective enemy. 21. The law of overpoweredness - Typically there is at least one overpowered item, weapon, mecha, or group. This overpoweredness is painfully obvious to the enemies, only to be bypassed by: mortal error on the heroes/villains side, impossibly fast technological catchup, or some sort of odd yet conveinent deus ex machina event 22. The law of overpoweredness part 2 - If the heroes or villians were overpowered but have either lost their powers or had the villains/heroes catch up... expect a "repowering" to happen, commonly matching the theme of the anime (new weapon, new item, new mecha, new technology, hidden weapon) 23. The law of overpoweredness part 3 - If the hero or villain is truly cornered and out of options, expect some overpowered item, weapon, card, trick, attack to bail them out of it. I mean, how hard is it to believe someone left something that important lying around, or in the other hidden pants pocket, or somewhere at the back of the mecha, or they already had it but were saving it for episode 10, 11 or 22. 24. The law of overpoweredness part 4 - If a hero has a sword, knife or melee weapon, they'll be able to easily take on people with guns, lasers, tanks, flamethrowers, giant robots... 25. The law of overpoweredness part 5 (Son Goku rule, Amuro Ray rule) - If a hero is outnumbered they'll easily be able to take on 10 to 1, 20 to 1 or 100 to 1 odds. And they'll be home in time for dinner. 26. The law of harems - If there is some ordinary looking guy, or some emo guy, or some distant guy, or some wuss looking guy, every top-tier goregous looking girl will be after him. 27. The law of harems part 2 - If there is already a girl (or two, or three, or four...) that doesn't stop the girl met this next week from trying to hook with the guy. 28. The law of harems part 3 - All other guys are unsuitable for the girls. These guys are either, not good looking enough, not smart enough, don't have spikey enough hair, don't sound right, or otherwise have some sort of major malfunction the girls can detect but that escapes the rest of us. 29. The law of harems part 4 - Never do the girls think to give up on the guy, despite the fact his attention is shared by another girl, or two other girls, or three other girls, or four, or five, or six... 30. The law of harems part 5 - There are many harems for guys, but little or no harems for girls. This assessment does not count Strawberry Panic or Maria-sama ga Miteru.

You know this was actually very informative. I watch a little anime like Inuyasha and Naruto and my sons play Dragonball Z until I have nightmares of KAME KAME HA! (i know i spelled that wrong) and I am a die hard Final Fantasy fan even though it has been 2 years since I have been able to pick up a game controller. Your synopsis is spot on my dear. If this is the kind of thing you do to unwind I am almost afraid to ask what it is you do when your brain is in overload.

Well when my brain is in overload/overdrive/LIMIT, I start discussions on what the brain, mind and spirit are.... and also a discussion on what Heaven/Afterlife really is. On "normal" mode, I post about science and technology. So, this list, yes it really is just me trying to have more fun. Maybe I'll do one for Final Fantasy, Cyn.

This discussion was great. And I still have the idea of the Final Fantasy rule discussion... it might come up soon.

well that is indeed the character of an anime should have or else they will look dull and lousy character, unless there story is plainly drama... have you notice all the anime seem to have that odd law? but sometime they just put too much exaggeration. after all they are just fictions. i also notice that in bleach particularly in episode 166. when Inoue just told ichigo to stop, and with just a sound of her voice he instantly regain power.

Indeed, but I still had to make the list for laughs. And you pointed out another rule I missed. Definitely looks like there will be a Part 3 to this listing.

I tried. I read the whole thing; but I have only ever watched Dragonball Z a few times. That is the extent of my anime knowledge. My boys love Dragonball , Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto though. I've tried to watch it because my husband likes it. I end up getting up to do something else. I just can't get into it. I have noticed the characters that the characters all have interesting hair like you pointed out in number 18! I like the crazy hair.

I missed a few "GOLD" rules for anime and hope you'll get to see that when I finish up the third list. If you are having viewing trouble with anime, maybe its just the genres Money. There's more than just Dragonball, Yu-gi-Oh and Naruto... (WAY more). I'm sure there's something out there you may like (or at least have a chance of getting into). I like rule 18 too. My younger brother is the only person I know who could come close to that (and its actually his real hair).

Yep, you did help inspire. First I was trying to write a response to you, but then thought of so many I thought, "needs new discussion". In fact the list is so long there's another part too it. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1468244.aspx I'll also thank Opera's note ability.
