What goes with cabbage? My husband loves cabbage but I am not really sure what to cook with it. My mother-in-law is showing me how she cooks it because that is how my husband likes it. She says steak goes really good with it but she didnt give me any other ideas. I tried her cabbage and its wounderful so I have started fixing it as well. But I would like some other ideas on what to serve with it. If you like to eat cabbage what are some ideas on what to serve with it.

Hi, Just like sunkissed, I love pork chops with cabbage but it goes well with any meat, chicken, ribs, steak, meatloaf. It also goes well by itself especially if you cook it with bacon, or ham hocks, salt pork or jowl and serve with some corn bread, ham goes well with it also,it's a versatile veggie.

My mother is going to cook ham and cabbage over the weekend. Cabbage isn't my favorite, but she likes it and I like ham, so I'll eat some of the cabbage, too. But, the ham helps flavor the cabbage and I'm assuming you can add seasoning if you want more flavor. Anyway, the cabbage cooks until it's soft - if I eat it, I only like it cooked soft. There are also cabbage rolls, that I do like, filled like stuffed peppers with a tomato sauce over them. They kind of look like cabbage burritos the way they're folded/rolled. Mom also chops up cabbage for home-made vegetable soup. That's another way I'll eat it because it cooks up really soft in the soup. You can also use cole slaw mix in the soup. Good luck!!

Hi Book. I know what you mean. We are called "Yanks" in many places (as well as in our American South as a reference to Northerners! LOL). I grew up not too far from the Pennsylvania Dutch who are actually Amish Germans and a lot of their cooking has influenced our area. It's really good food. I loved the food in Germany (especially the gulaschsuppe) when I was there for the Weinnachtmarkt, but I've never grown to like cabbage or anything sour. I'm a sad speciman of a Delaware Valley resident, born and raised. There is a German restaurant in Philadelphia that serves fried sauerkraut - I don't know if it is something served in the Schwarzvald area since that's their theme, but it is about the only way I've eaten sauerkraut that I thought was good. Thanks for the comment!! (Isn't it time for bed over there??)

Hi. snoopy04. I think that you should serve some fried chicken with cabbage. You can also try serving some baked grilled chicken. This would taste delicious, I am very sure!

If you're talking about meat, basically any meat will go with cabbage - same as any other vegetable. To make it really, really healthy serve it with a fish that is not fried - red snapper, whiting, etc... and steam the cabbage with other veggies like broccoli, corn, carrots.

I often cook cabbage with roast beef or roast lamb, and I have also used it with steak. Recently my partner brought home some venison steak and I cooked red cabbage and mashed potatoes to go with it, it tasted great.

Corned beef and cabbage is a really popular combination. Some people will also cook different types of sausage, like polish sausage with it.

I love cabbage rolls but HATE making them so I've come up with a casserole... and apparently it's not such an original idea! lol I put up the cabbage (well I should say hubby does the cutting) and spread to the bottom of a casserole, then I top with a mixture of cooked ground beef, onions, canned tomatoes, peppers and minute rice. Pour tomato juice until it covers half way up the meat mixture and top with grated cheese. Same great cabbage roll taste serve differently! With the leftover cabbage, I always make soup and freeze it. Once we thaw it, I can add whatever we have on hand.
