When can you afford to retire?

When I hit the big 50 I thought now is the time I should think about setting a date to retire. After all who wants to spend all their life working just to retire for a few years and then end up dead or worse suffer such ill health that you can no longer enjoy life to the full. The big question is: When can we afford to take the plunge hand in our notice and head off for a long happy retirement? We have both saved for a pension but this will be reduced the sooner we take it. What will sway our hand and give up well paid jobs for life on such a small amount? I must admit this winter I have been near a few times when the weather is cold and grey and the mornings are dark it becomes ever harder to drag myself out of bed and go to work, but now the lighter mornings are here and spring has sprung perhaps I will give it another year. Who knows.
