Relatives at holidays

You've planned the perfect holiday dinner for family, with the help of your spouse/girlfriend, or boyfriend. Everything is liad out and looks great. it took hours of time to cook, decorate and make the house look wonderful. But relatives arrive, and no more than ten minutes later they rearrange everything you've done, try to give you tons of cooking tips, especially over all the food you've slaved over for hours! This happened to us last year, and it was only the mercies of god that kept me from taking a large carving knife and running amok! Has this happened to you before?

Yes, I have had this happen and believe me I have had to practice some miraculous self control!!! I drove 4 hours to my mother in laws house, went shopping, woke up the next morning at 6 a.m., started cooking and preparing all of the side dishes, my ex husband and I working and slaving over the turkey to make it juicy so no one could complain, I went way over what I would normally do for this family to no avail! After me and my ex husband laid everything out the complaints started. My gravy (the gravy my mother and grandmother taught me how to make)was too runny, the turkey was dry, the mashed potatoes was of all things..too smooth, there were no lumps!!!! No one liked candied yams, my sister in law was the most brutal of all and said that most of the food was not edible and just sat at the table. I got so mad at her, I told her if she didn't like it she could go to Burger King where she can have it her way. Everyone stuffed their faces and didn't even thank me and my exhusband for the work we did, didn't offer to clean up or wash dishes. They just laid on the couch. We cleaned up and put everything in a cooler, we decided to leave that night. They wanted to know why we weren't leaving left overs and for one time in our entire marriage my ex husband stood up for us and said "you complained so d**n much, why should we?" Later on, I walked into the kitchen and my sister in law was rummaging through the cooler wanting something to eat. I told her Burger King was down the road and since my food was inedible she should be eating it. That was one of the last holidays I spent with that family. I can't say I miss them at all.

I guess they think if you aren't a "seasoned" cook you must need tips. The first holiday I cooked I ran into that. We did a potluck and I made the bird and potatoes. When the family walked into the kitchen they were appalled that I had made so little food. It was funny because at the end of the night everyone had eaten their fill of the bird and potatoes and we had plenty left over.
