Hi kalass, your 54 mbps is the the max speed your network card can support. Your Internet Service Provider, cable, broadband or DSL subscription sets your Server speed. If your into Dial-up your max speed is 56kbps, for broadband, cable or DSL its 512kbps and up. I say maximum speed because you could never reach this, somewhere along the way between you and your provider a considerable amount of transmission lost will occur. The best way to actually test your speed is to use online speed testers like www.speedtest.net, you'll get here your effective download and upload speeds, this may also vary depending on the time of the day, during peak and off-peak hour.

I have 100mbit downstream and 10mbit upstream, which is quite good. I live in Sweden and the most ppl here have 8/1mbit or 24/3mbit. If I convert from sek to dollar I pay $54/month for my internet.
