What do you think of the Chinese education system and the Chinese students?

Many foreigners think the Chinese education system is not so good because children are always taught to study for tests and everying is for tests, children have less time to read other meaningful books and develop their own interests. By contrast,for example, American education system are relavively flexible. So what do you think of ths situation? Why?
