I think, for me, it simply depends on how tired I am! Sometimes I am so exhausted I can't help but drift off into a lovely deep sleep the moment my head hits the pillow, which is lovely! But then, other times, no matter how sleepy I feel I just toss and turn and can't get to sleep at all, and lie awake getting more and more stressed because no matter how much I'm counting sheep I just can't sleep and then I'm so stressed there's no hope! So at times like that I'll pick up a heavy-going philosophy book to try and distract my brain and mentally tire me out. Or, if I'm stressed about something in particular, I will try and do that particular task, like check my bank account online, write that letter I had been meaning to write or tidy the house! Many times I have done some great cleaning in the middle of the night - it's great when I wake up to a spotless kitchen! But also watching a nice DVD or reading an easy-going book for an hour does the trick. I think we all have our own little ways!

The last thing I do before sleeping is brush my teeth. I used to like going to sleep with the TV on but my partner likes to go to sleep in the darkness so I don't do that anymore. If i'm not too tired I like to read a few pages of whatever book I'm reading at the time. Reading helps to send me off to sleep easier because sometimes I have problems falling asleep.

I spend a lot of time on the internet as i have insomnia. Then when i think i may be able to fall asleep, i brush my teeth. The thing that worked best for my insomnia was having a tv in the bedroom, i would fall asleep fine, but my husband has banned it now after years. It keeps him awake. We cant win. So the computer is my best buddy before bed.

Before I go to bed last night, what I did was to pack my the things that I will need for my weekend get away. I just felt excited and I think, even if it's still 2 days before Saturday, it will save me time if I will prepare some of my stuff. Usually, on my normal days, what I do before sleeping is to think or reflect how my entire day went. That is my time to think about myself, after that, I pray. It is always nice to know to have a daily conversation with God.
