I have a few tanks that have lots of Java moss in them and once in a while I find new fry or even some babies that are a few weeks old swimming around in the tank that I did not even know had had eggs. The latest was the Dwarf Golden Eyed Cichlid and I have seen maybe 10 to 15 three to four week old babies one day when I was looking close at the tank. Also there were several fry of the Cuban Limas (a live bearing fish) in the same tank. Have you ever been surprised by finding new fry (especially of egg laying fish) in your tank(s)? And if so what kinds were they and how many did you find and save?

yeah I've experienced this alright...I have a ten gallon full of java moss and I find new fry like every month...the mom are less than an inch in length and they breed like crazy...what seems weird to me is that the new fry keep being females...there are only about 5 males out of all fifty or so fry.

It takes a few months to be able to show the difference between male and female livebearing fish. All of them will have the rounded anal fins until the males mature and the anal fin become modified. so you might have more males than you think or the males were eaten b;u the other fish n the tank.

When I was a kid, I used to have black Mollies alot. One day I brought a couple more home and 3 days later suddenly I'm finding lil black specks swimming around the tank. I quickly netted them all and put them in a seperate tank so the adults wouldn't eat them. Obviously I brought home either one or both females who were bout to give birth. lol I don't remember how many there were but there sure were alot of them.

This year we haven't been having many babies, which is always a huge surprise. We had ten babies born and the next day they were gone. I was surprised, as Endler's Livebearers normally won't eat the babies. Many years I have 100's to sell along with other fish I have ordered, but this year looks like that is not going to happen. I think the weather is to blame, as we have had 90 plus temperature days, then it will be in the 70's for awhile, then it will be in the 80's. Its never good when the tanks get to hot and lost 1 adult catfish, as had an earthquake and power outage. I am hoping this is not a sign of the summer, as power outages are a nightmare.
