I love songwriters, like Bob Dylan, John Prine, James Taylor, Leonard Cohen..the ones who write thoughtful lyrics. I love punk music, too, but that's another discussion. Who's your favorite songwriter, and why?

Andrew McMahon. If you haven't heard of him, look him up and read the story of the past few years of his life. He's an inspiration and his music is amazing.

you have mentioned a couple of my favorites, To this I would add, Harry Chapin, Joe Cocker, Jim Croce, Nancy Griffith, Elton john and Bernie Taupin team. Really this is a very short list, I could go on and on. I love folk and classic rock. Anything that has a distinct melody.

Probably Ani DiFranco. Her lyrics are incredibly inspiring and empowering and also strange at times and always poetic. I think she's one of the most talented artists alive today.

My absolute favorite songwriter is Martin Lee Gore of Depeche Mode... every song he has ever written strikes a chord in me, all of his lyrics say something about my life. He can write the most sweet and gentle love song, or a down-and-dirty, in-your-face rock song... he's never done anything wrong. The man is amazing.

Hello there sweetie. I would have to say that my most favorite songwriter of all time would definitely have to be Eric Clapton. The song he wrote for his "late son" really took my heart away and I'm truly enchanted by the lyrics he portrayed in his songs. If I could have certain kind of skills, I would love to be bawled away by writing skills; be it in any forms of writing or through lyrics. Good discussion here. I enjoyed it very much.
