Get seen by Google

Could someone explain to me, in lamens terms, how to get seen by search engines such as google? I have content for my blog and have submitted to directories. I also have it listed on my profiles at different sites, but i get little traffic so far. I have only been working on my blog for a little over a month, so I dont expect huge amounts of traffic, but a little would be nice :)
