Adjusting to a new Country ...

Malaysia
April 29, 2008 10:38pm CST
I've been living in Malaysia for the past 6 months and its being a little hard on me. I had to leave behind my family and friends and start all over again here. The adjusting process has been a little hard because everything is different from what I am used to in my country. Here, in Malaysia, the language is Malay or Chinese, lucky for me, they speak English too so that part is ok. But they drive on the right side, the food is very different and spicy, there are tons of products and brands that I've never heard of and getting a job here is being harder and harder. Can you tell me, is this part of the process??

Hi dear! I used to live in Malaysia (am Malaysian) and I moved to Switzerland in February this year. So I understand what you're going through. People here drive on the other side of the road, they speak French (which I can barely utter without turning red), the products and brands are completely different and without a permit or the ability to speak fluent French, getting a job is impossible. Do you have any friends? If you like knitting and cross-stitch, I know a group of ladies who will happy to welcome you into their group (I was part of it when I was in Kuala Lumpur). They meet up at least once a week to talk, chat and share projects. For shopping, if you're in Petaling Jaya, Bangsar or Kuala Lumpur, there are plenty of shopping malls that stock products for expats. What would you like to work as? If you need help, do ask. I'm always happy to help...because well, I know what it feels like being new to a foreign country. ps: You might want to try steamed chicken, roast duck/chicken, char siew (pork)...since you're staying in the Bukit Bintang area, have a visit to Jalan Alor. There are heaps of non-spicy food around - wantan noodles, noodle soup, stir fries, fried fish with Thai mango salad, etc. Don't be afraid to ask them if it has chilli or whether it's spicy. A lot of hawkers are used to seeing tourists around and if you can pick up basic malay like "Ada cili dalam?" (Is there chilli inside) - it'll be even better. :) Good luck and take care (don't hesitate to ask me, alright?)

So where are you going? Or you are currently residing in Malaysia?I'd say you are just having a 'homesick' period. After a few months, you will be living as usual again. Not all foods in Malaysia are spicy..You just need to search for it when you have the time to explore Malaysia.Speaking of which, why did you choose to live at Malaysia?Where are you from?

hie there ^^ oh and i thought you are all alone here.Well..I can recommend you some foods which are not so spicy for westerners. Most of my foreign friends likes Chinese foods a lot .At first they hesitated to try but once they adapted to the taste..lol..they eat just like a typical Chinese Malaysian.Anyhow, that depends on your location though.Which part of Malaysia are you currently residing?Malaysia has a lot western restaurants too..i don't think its hard for you to find American foods here^^Anyway..enjoy your stay in Malaysia.Oh ..and happy earning in mylot !!

I'm a Filipino. Back in 1993 i worked in Senai, Johore Bahru in Malaysia. Luckily it wasn't that hard for me adjusting my life over there. Maybe because i had Filipina friends who like me, went to work there. So when one of us gets homesick, we help entertain each other to forget the loneliness we feel for our family back home. It also helped a lot that Malaysians are friendly people. By the time we got over our homesickness, Malaysia has become our home away from home.
