I have taken first aid way back in college. Now that I have kids, I would like to relearn everything for their safety. Thank goodness I have not had to come close to needing this maneuver, but it's one of those things parents should know. It's something everyone should know since anyone can choke on something anywhere at anytime. Have you ever performed the heimlich maneuver on anyone? What about saving someone period?

I had to do it on my oldest daughter when she was 4 years old. She was laying down eating jelly beans - next thing I know she was chocking. Luckily it came right up.

Holy crap. Luckily. I just couldn't imagine anything worse than to see your kid get into a situation like that. My husband and I just had a conversation over dinner about a co-worker who went to a concert with his teenage son. The son came up to his dad and told him he was having chest pains. Luckily again, it turned out to be a collapsed lung. At least it wasn't a heart attack! I'm glad your daughter is okay.

Yes, it is always wise to keep those skills sharpened, for they can come in handy at any time. I have done CPR in Colorado about 3 years ago, and the person life was saved. I have posted it on mylot. I have not done the Heimelech Maneuver.
