Can you get the Iphone on pay as you go

In the UK i heard you can only get the iphone on contract is this true.

though iphone is gr8 there are some flaws in it.. i ll get it if its fre. otherwise no need of getting such costly things!!

Im pretty sure it is true... The Iphone is quite an expensive phone!
