They Said The Derby Had a "Sad Ending?" - for Eight Belles it was simply an End

Do you think it was a bit more than a "sad ending" for Eight Belles? The poor horse gave it's owner second place in exchange for it's life. What will that earn the owner? Money? A trophy? We all know that it earned Eight Belles a shot. Why do we so called civilized people gather together and watch as animals compete in races such as this? If people choose to put themselves in vehicles and drive with abandon with no regard to the safety of themselves and others, it is their choice. They also have the capability of knowing and speaking out as to whether they feel that they can perform on a particular day. Dogs, horses, and even cockroaches can't say, "This is not a good day for me, I think I'm going to sit this race out." Thank you for listening to me gripe a bit.~D

Hi kitchenwitchoftupper---this is indeed sad news. I'm not a big fan of the horse racing industry to begin with...It's "nice" to think that horse racing has the happily ever after feel of that movie "Seabiscuit" which actually is a favorite movie of mine, but this is far from the case...If you would like to read my opinions about the cruelties of horse racing...please read my article I had done sometime ago and is over at Associated Content here http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/359616/the_reality_of_thoroughbred_racing.html It's not just horse racing either...what about greyhound dogs?? No animal should be "trained" just for our amusement or entertainment

I do not believe in any thing that uses animals period....I think it is cruel and unusual punishment..I love animals of all kinds, even horses, all animals and i just hate to hear that they have been mistreated or abused..I have a friend that has a b/f that does that rooster fighting, and i really hate to even hear about it,to me it is so sad...Maybe i love my animals to much,i don't know, but my animals are treated with the highest respect..I have 2 spoiled cats and a spoiled dog and a parrot, and they get the best i can give them..My animals are dependant on me for their lively hood and i would never ever mistreat them...It makes me shiver to think of any helpless animal be mistreated...Just to be honest i cannot stand any form of cruelity..I don't even watch shows that includes any form of torment or punishment....Thats ok you can rant on,i am with you 100% ....Mylot stopped me from using the correct word,so i had to say rooster Haha, i violated the rule..sorry mylot..

Darlin I will listen to you gripe all you want, what are friends for. I hadn't thought of it this way before. All my critters are simply pets, household members. I didn't watch the Derby, I did read about the horse on the yahoo news. That is sad about the horse. I would not have wanted to witness the fall or when he got his shot and then carried off.

hello Donna :)) I missed the derby today as I was out and about most of the day. I have been reading here in mylot of its sad plight. Having raised an all male family I would get shot for saying anything like what you just said. But I agree with you whole heartedly. I appreciate someone saying something. However I am afraid protests fall on deaf ears.

oh i was bawling my eyes out when this happened! she did so well and to have the race over with, THEN something tragic happens? when they've reached the finish line..the horses are allowed to run for a bit longer then are slowly pulled back. so how does TWO fractured ankles happen doing it that way?! i can see that happening if she was suddenly and fiercly pulled back (picture quarterhorse sliding stops where they almost sit on their hindquarters as their front feet skid to a stop) but thats not what they do in a race. they said she was fit and healthy, so how does a healthy, strong young filly just suddenly fracture BOTH ankles like that?!

What a great question you ask. I did not watch the race but my partner did. I was in another room on the computer and she was giving me a blow-by-blow description of what was happening. I didn't happen to have ear plugs handy. Thank you for your response ~D
