How much homework from school do your children get?

I'm just wondering. My child is in the 4th grade and she brought home enough homework every day to keep her busy until bed time. I recently changed teachers (for many other reasons) ndnow she has about an hour of homework per day.

It's nice to hear your point of view and i respect it very much. Wow! You must get so tired during the day. I'm glad that you do your homework though.. Alot of kids are out messing around instead so good for you :)

My daughter is in 2nd grade and in the gifted program. She usually has 25 spelling words, they have to write 3 times each and sentences. They have 5 double side pages of other homework.

Wow that sounds like alot of homework. My daughter has 25 spelling words a week too, before changing teachers one of her assignments one day per week would be to write each word 10 times. I am not kidding either. My daughter since 3rd grade has made 100% on every single spelling test. The teacher before we made the switch to the new one, on her report card gave her only a 90 for a grade in spelling. Now she just got her new report card with the new teacher and got 100% yay!

Our daughter isn't in school yet. But, my niece and nephew bring home 2 hours worth of homework each night. I think that's a little too much.

That is alot of homework. I know in highschool I had a ton of homework because I had like 6 or 7 different classes and tests to stuy for, but stil 2 hours seems a bit much.

I would say that an hour a day is appropriate at that grade level. I think some teachers get a little carried away with the homework because there are so many things they want to teach that they just don't have time for. I made lesson plans for every day, but we very seldom got through all the material I'd wanted to cover.

Are you a teacher? yes the hour of homework is good. she does a little in each subject now and we have time to study for her spelling tests and she also has to do 20 minutes of reading a day on top of regular homework, which I think is awesome because she loves to read. Thanks for your comments :)

I don't have any idea how much homework my son has because he won't bring any home. He always says he got it done but when report cards come out he gets 90-100% on tests and 0% on homework because he doesn't do it and turn it in. When he was in 4th grade, he had a teacher that assigned so much homework, like you said - he was working on it right up til bedtime. It got to where he hated to do homework at all and I couldn't hardly get him to do any. Now he doesn't do any that I know of. What this 4th grade teacher taught my son is that it doesn't matter if you do your homework or not - you're still gonna pass. Now that he is in high school (he's 14 now), I'm afraid of what's gonna happen.

Oh I would have a little chat with the teachers. I'm in AZ and have not been 100% happy with the education system out here so far. The teacher my child had, had promised to do amny things, one of them was to make sure my daughter knew what her homework assignments were and knew how to do them. I had called her and asked her and spoke with her in person about this each time she promised to help and did not do anything. Just one of the few reasons we had changed her teachers, but this lady was like a drill sargeant about homework! I would much rather my kid keep busy with homework than watch tv, but it was to the point of my daughter having no freetime whatsoever. many times she had so much that she had to stay up until 10 and 11 o clock. This same teacher.. all of the 4th and 5th graders had a reward trip for doing well in class. She did not let any of the class go because alot of the kids were misbehaving, so she punished the entire class.. those children that work hard and do 4 hours of homework per day did not get to go. sad. Thank god we changed her teacher. She is doing 100 percent better and not failing her tests anymore.. she had fails for the first time in her life because the teacher was not letting us know when tests would be or what to study for them. lol

My children are in grade 2, and I have one in grade 7. The ones in grade two usually have about forty minutes of homework each a day, and my oldest daughter, well it varies with her. Sometimes she has twenty minutes, sometimes two hours depending on how much she gets done in school. Having to do homework from the time you get home until the time you go to bed is definitely too much, especially if you are only in grade 4.

My son is in the first grade and has homework every night of the week. It is all simple things, but he needs help with all of it. It is difficult to keep up with it all and practice speling words, read every night, play games, spend equal amounts of time with the other children. It can be very overwhelming!

With my neice it's either feast or famine; this has been through all of her schooling and she's in 7th now. It is either they have none at all or she is given so much that she takes 4 or more hours to do. I agree that is too much all at once. They need to spread it out a bit to make it more even. An hour a night I can understand even a bit longer then that since she's now in 7th grade but coming home and doing it from 4pm till 9pm is silly. She has no time to rest or relax, to have fun or play with her friends. It can get very frustrating for her and it's really easy then not to want to do any of it. They aren't helping the kids by doing this, just making theim hate school even more.

My son used to come home with quite a bit of homework only because he wasn't able to understand what they did for the day and it would take all night to try and get it done , they have since found out he has learning difficulties and have tried to adjust the work more to his level so now all he has to do is read for twenty minutes a day (which I still can't get him to do ) . The older kids are in high school and don't really know how long they spend on their homework as they just go do it and don't really talk about it unless it is a school project they are interested in or want to go somewhere's to finsih it up .

My son is in the 4th grade too. But he has alot of homework each night, but its because he doesn't get it done in school, instead he goes to the bathroom or lets his mind wunder. the teacher gives them more than enought time in school to finish most things.
