This horse must have been really tired of his rider. The officer was treated for minor injuries after traffic noise spooked Aldo on Friday. The 8-year-old took off about eight blocks to the stable. New York police spokesman Paul Browne says the horse "knows his turf." Officer Martin Brown says Aldo suffered a few small cuts. The 21-year police veteran riding him had some injuries to his neck and shoulder. What do you think of that. I found that to be funny! That's too bad for the officer. I think it's amazing that these horses can work in a busy urban area like that to begin with. They are usually so skiddish and scared of everything. I've seen these horses in action with riots and the like and I'm always in awe in how much they trust their rider. But, that obviously wasn't the case with this horse. It's pretty normal for the horse to head back to the stable when they are riderless because that's where the food is. They always seem to know where home is.

horses are NOT always skitish... and police departments usually specificly look for older well trained horses....

Some horses are more skiddish than others, however it does take a special horse to be able to do this kind of work. These horse are highly trained and it takes much time to desensitise the horse to the urban surrounding and what they might encounter in doing their jobs as police horses.

NO, that is so NOT funny. At all. Not even in the slightest. But then, you are talking to someone who has ended up in the Emergency Room for broken bones from being thrown from a horse. I was riding down a country road when a trucker thought it would be funny to honk his horn just as he come upon us. And oh yeah, when I was about 11 years old, a group of us girls were out riding our ponies and got lost in the woods. It was getting dark and we were getting scared, so I gave my pony the reins and she took us home. For certain when we got home past our curfew my very worried parents did not find it funny that my hungry pony was able to find her way home to her barn, stall and dinner. So, nothing funny in that story, just glad that the officer and horse who provide a very valuable service to the NYPD and the citizens of New York came out of it safe and alive.
