What is Google-Analytics - on a lot of websites / myLot

I've seena lot of sites using google-analytics on their website. What exactly is it? Does it help to improve search engine ranking? Does it get more visitors? Or is it like any other stats counter? Do you use it on your website? Someone enlighten me please.

i use it but i'm not sure of everything it does and stuff.. i just use to see how many hits i'm getting on my sites each day.
