What is Divinity? ( asked by a student)

Generally, people relate divinity with enlightenment. The world enlightenment has been there in many societies without any concrete interpretation. There is a problem. When we say enlightenment is the supreme knowledge, no clear idea is given about knowledge. If is is a piece of knowledge,it must, as a rule, come under a heading, in a particular category. If it is related to the universe,it is the field of astronomy, cosmology, etc. If it is about so called religion,it is related to mythology, and if it is about light, speed etc.,it is the study of physics, and so on. Now what is left is only surmise and imagination, the unknown.Even unknown falls into a category when it is known. There can not be a knowledge that could be called a supreme knowledge.Divinity and enlightenment are,as I have come to understand, merely hypothications, and if anybody can get to them, he can do it only hypothatically. Divinity are broadly applied but loosely defined terms, used variously within different faiths and belief systems - and even by different individuals within a givin faith. It refers to some transcendent or transcendental power, or its attributes or manifestations in the world. Means to say, the root words is literally Godlike. Divinity for me, is only applied to God, the saviour of all mankind.

Interesting. I don't think of divinity and enlightenment as being the same, although I guess it could be said that one cannot achieve divinity without enlightenment. Even though we can control our own enlightenment, we have no control over the intervention of the Divine. Supreme knowledge to me, although I've never used that term, means understanding the mysteries of life and the Divine, which I do not believe is possible on this earth. Speaking of such things as hypothetical is for those who have not achieved enlightenment, and yet, achieving even a little enlightenment invariably means that we have only begun to realize how little we really know, and therefore cannot have achieved true enlightenment.
