What information do you refuse to give out over the internet?

I won't give out my social security number. I mean sometimes there are legit sites, maybe government stuff or former student loans, that really do need my social security number. I'll get their phone number, or whatever just so I won't have to give out my SS number on the internet. What about you? What information do you refuse to give out over the internet?

My mom recently got a telemarketing call on her cell phone. It's a sad day when even cell phones are being overtaken by solicitors.

Your mom can register her cell phone number on the do not call list. https://www.donotcall.gov I registered my home phone, and now my cell phone. It does help to keep the telemarketers away.

I don't give out any personal info unless it is ebay or to someone I trust and then that is usually just my mobile number or MSN addy. Can't be too careful these days. I wouldn't even use a credit card online if indeed I had one.

I know what you mean. The few times I use a credit card for payment, I feel somewhat OK because my credit card company will not make me pay for any purchases that someone else made in the event my card number is used without my knowledge.

Then you are lucky. some companies don't care as long as the card is being used.

I only give my phone number to sites I am purchasing something from. Any other site, you're right, why would they need it?

Hi There, I must say it does sort of worry me sometimes when I give out personal information on the Internet. There are always people looking for it, and they come up with new schemes everyday. I would have to say I am with you and I would not give out such things as my Social Insurance number or my health card number. The other things you sort of have to give out if you want to purchase anything or conduct business on the net. cheers, :)

Right. We kind of have to tell certain things if we want to make any internet purchases.

Honestly...I don't think there is any personal info I haven't given at some point along the line to one site or another. Obviously, I don't go posting my ss# on myLot...I don't even post my real name in most forums like this. But, on certain sites I have given my social, drivers license, etc. Alot of times, when you call it in...they enter it into a computer and send it to the main office. I figure, what's the difference. I concede it's probably a little more secure with some companies to let them do it. I tend to not type out my husbands name, or my kids names, too often..more because it isn't my place to go throwing someone else's personal info around online.

Yeah, when I was talking about my social security number I mean like when you purchase something and they ask for your credit card number, and then some have asked for my social security number. That always prompts me to gett off of that site.

Wow...I haven't had that happen. That would definitely put up a red flag for me too!

Hi AmbiePam I do not give any info out! The most I will share is my Email or my mobile number! You can change both these so no one can con you. It is best to face people and get ID from them before you give them any info? Be careful dont be to trusting, I would hate for you to be telling us one day that you have lost money to some scam. Be very very careful.

No, I will never lose money in a scam. : ) I see so many people here on mylot talk about scams they fell for, and I can't help wondering how they fell for them. It is way too suspicious when people ask for all this information, and they offer something that sounds too good to be true.

I am the same. I am not giving any information over the internet. You are right. It is the last information you want to give anyone. Also, make sure not to give anyone you b-date. Only IRS and bank can have the right information.

On a secure site that I have done business with them before I give most of my personal info. I never give out any of my banking information, ss number, to anyone especially from emails. On forums I do not give out ANY personal info and that includes email address.

Before... i use to give all information about me... like my address, phone number, and email... but because of the proliferation of scams... and i have been hacked before... i don't give any of those anymore... especially my credit card number... and bank account number... One can never be too careful nowadays...

I haven't been here all week and what a great avatar to come back too, I needed that laugh.. Along with my SS number, I won't give out my address or phone number. some people have given me theirs, but I don't call them..Having someone know where you live or have your phone number is a little too close to home, especially when you meet someone on the internet, you never know who they really are..

Hi AmbiePam I guess my National Insurance number too is one of things that I won't give. I won't give bank details anymore either and just go through PayPal as I've been stung by a company (did get the money back though)but will give the standard information most sites require name, adress and telephone number and also date of birth if applicable. If it is a secure site, then I will give out any information needed.. I have done this for years on the net, I did use to pay my bills over the internet and used to sell on ebay, so I have given out this information and never had any trouble..
