Why does Vista freeze up so often?

My other computer was an XP. It was a real work horse, but very slow and it had a tendancy to freeze up after awhile. So, I figured that I would have better luck buying a brand new computer with Vista. But, Vista is not turning out to be much better. No so! Most times my Vista freezes up at least once an hour. And if I try to click my mouse to unfreeze the computer, Internet Explorer shuts down and restarts. I have no clue what's going on with it. Any suggestions? Does this happen with any other Vista users?

Now this is where I am different from others. I have had not one problem with Vista. I run sevral windows and different programs and never have a problem. In fact I am very pleased with Vista and got a laptop with Vista for my dh.

The short answer -- Microsoft stinks. But, you knew that. The long answer -- Vista is a memory hog. When you run a lot of programs or have a lot of web pages cached, there is no room for Vista to run. So, rather than share memory space like a good little program, it freezes your whole darn computer.

That sounds about right. Most times, I'm running multiple programs in the background, in addition to Vista, Yesterday I was running paint program, notepad (up to six files open, yesterday), a snipping program for photos, My Documents file, Spyware Doctor (spyware removal program): all at the same time. Plus, there are numerous apps like my Comodo Firewall that run continuously. And, I never have less than two Internet Explorer windows running. I suppose that could be a load on any computer. Wonder what my alternatives are now? Upgrade again? Or, try to do less multi-tasking? Thanks for your insightful comments. They really helped. I will keep all that in mind.

I was given a vista cd around the time vista came out, i never used it as xp pro works just fine for me at the moment, and after hearing various negative statements about vista i might wait for another year or so before am tempted to try an upgrade.

Vista need a lot of memory to run. what is your vista version? i suggest you to choose version that match with your need. if you need it for gaming, use premium. if you use it for work, vista business will be great. don't choose ultimate if you don't need it. do some tune up for your vista, like disable animation, cause it spend a lot of your pc memory.. hope this can help you :)

I've also had many problems with Vista, which came on my new laptop last October. I thought Vista was supposed to be more stable, but I have never seen so many blue screens in my life. And the Internet Explorer issue was happenning at least once a day for quite awhile. It seems that it can't handle having more than a couple of tabs open. I would have thought that IE being a Microsoft program, should not have any problems with Vista. I just downloaded a bunch of Windows Updates, so I am hoping one of them fixes the issues.
