Memoirs

Has anyone attempted to write his or her memoir yet? I've started mine a couple of years back and finished it last year. I'm quite proud of it but I don't know if I should publish it or if anyone is actually interested to read it. I found the exercise bittersweet especially when I wrote the parts in my past that were heartbreaking. But I found it to be liberating too. No matter what everyone's version of my life is, my memoir is my version of my reality.

I did try to write mine but didn't get very far, as I hit a spot that I just couldn't get out of me and put into words. One day I may complete the job though. Why not publish your memoirs? I remember a few years ago here in the UK there was a spate of newly released books on the market where people were writing of their life story/memoirs. I read a few of them and found them very interesting.

I think that writing memoirs is a fantastic idea. I have started with small periods of time in my life before. I have always felt like I had gone through plenty to write one that others would want to read. However, I think that probably everyone thinks that. But I also think it's more important to write them for yourself..and maybe for your children. I could imagine reading my mother's memoir and it would be an incredible read. I guess that's what I really want to do. I want to write her story. She's been through enough to write ten books..or make a movie out of. But I cant get her to write about any of it. I need to get all the details out of her so I can write it for her... She's been through children dying to winning the lottery to abuse to having a nightmarishly cruel childhood... just crazy stuff. Now that I am thinking about it, I really want to start bugging her about it again. Great post! :)

I am thinking very seriously about writing my memoirs. I think they might be interesting, considering the things I have had to overcome in my life to get where I am. If you are intereste in publishing your memoirs, might I suggest self publishing? Just go to lulu.com. My husban and I sel published our books there. His are sci-fi novels, and mine is a cookbook.

I haven't started on mine..not in the near future anyway. Writing is not exactly my cup of tea. I hope you get to publish your memoirs. There are sites here that do accept materials like that for publication. I hope it doesn't make me cry, though. LOL

I was thinking about it a couple of years ago. Then I decided not to because it would be sad to see all of the books staying on the shelves. I couldn't live with that thought. I don't know if anyone would want to read it. I agree when you said it was liberating. I feel like that with most things that I write. But, something so personal? That terrifies me, the thought of having someone criticize my life or my work.

You made a good point about the memoir being so personal that it's terrifying. I too still feel that way and that's stopping me from publishing. To be criticized for the choices I made, I don't think I am big enough of a person to accept that, at least, not yet. Just look at how Barbara Walters's life is being ripped apart because of the her memoir and that one little chapter about her affair with a then married lover.
