Do you think its hard to make a living as a self employed writer?

Recently self employed, I find I am working about 12+ hours a day to scrape a living. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just hard to get your foot on the first rung of the writing ladder? Anyone in the same boat? - Any suggestions welcomed, as are any ideas :)

Hi there justperfect! I don't really know because I am not a professional writer but I guess it depends on the available opportunities, the pay in your area and also, if you haven't proven anything yet, you will really have a hard time. In some places, recommendations are highly valued especially from really credible people. I wish you the best.

Thanks a lot Nanyangel :) I have been published on the Internet. But I am trying to break into magazine journalism and have sent loads of work out to people and had some small response, but it is just so slow and in the meantime the bills still have to be paid. I wonder if there is a paying site on the Internet that I don't know about yet, as I seem to do most of my publishing online at the moment.
