Does money matter in a relationship?

I see many couples fight or are unhappy because after their relationship happened, money has become a big problem! If the man earns lesser than the woman does, does it matter in a relationship because of ego? My friend was sharing with me on how bad she feels when her man depends on her for buying daily household goods for the family. She says when she has to do the shopping, taking care of the children by herself and run the family, why does she need her husband. What do you say? Does money matter in your relationship to an extent?
