Super volcano!

I was really shocked when I watched an episode from one science channel about super volcanoes. The most disturbing thing is, although super volcanoes have been generally known to be extinct or dormant, there is actually one that could erupt anytime. It's the world-famous Yellowstone National Park. Those hundreds of people walking around parks of geysers and hot springs are actually walking over a super volcano. It could produce a super eruption anytime. I think this newly-disseminated fact could send a negative message to tourists around the world who are want to visit the park. the question is, do the scientists have even the slightest idea when is this going to happen. I just hope scientists wold have all the knowledge they need to prevent this would-be catastrophic event if it would happen.

Hi Nicky_Ferdie, I read some information about the Yellowstone National Park "supervolcano" (I think they called it a "culda" or something like that). There's supposed to be a few more like it around the globe, any of which might decide to wake up at an awkward moment. The problem with the Yellowstone area is that, supposedly, the thing has been erupting at relatively regular intervals over many hundreds of thousands of years, and the next eruption according to that cyclic schedule is now about "due", or even "overdue". While you express hope that the scientists may have the knowledge to prevent a catastrophe, IMO it's unlikely that anyone anywhere would have any way at all to actually stop an eruption. BUT if they had sufficient information to predict an eruption, then it might be possible to prevent a catastrophe by getting everyone to safety before the eruption took place. Given the size of the thing, being able to evacuate all the affected people would be a mighty big task.

Hi again, I just remembered the name they used to describe these so-called "supervolcanoes" - it's "caldera" (I think).

Well, they must have all those sensors and gizmos to monitor the activity of the volcano and hopefully it will give them an idea of whether an eruption is imminent. Volcanologists have had great successes with several volcanoes and maybe they have things well in hand regarding the super volcano at Yellowstone National Park.
