Throwing Away Your Old Bras? Stop!

No really! I'm someone who gives all kinds of stuff to my local charity shops. Even if I'm not sure if they'll want it - I figure it's better to take the chance than just throw it away. If they don't want it then they'll bin it themselves anyway. Women's Hour on Radio 4 had an interesting article on this last week - here's a short excerpt about it: Would you send your old bras to a charity shop? Most of us would cringe with horror at the thought of it but bras are one of Oxfam’s most valuable second-hand resources because they sell to a booming and appreciative market in developing countries. They are sorted and packed at Oxfam’s own recycling plant - called Wastesaver - and everything that does not immediately fly off the rails in the charity’s high street shops ends up there to be re-directed to a more appropriate market place. Anything from twenty tonnes of old blankets, to a Mary Quant original. The plant makes around a million pounds a year for Oxfam. There's an interview with several of the staff at the plant, talking more about what goes on. Personally I think it's wonderful. We shouldn't waste what could be of use to others. I love the idea of passing things on, and it's so simple for the average person to do. If you'd like to listen to the article, here's a link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/02/2008_21_thu.shtml In short, donate to charity shops!

Wow, I didn't even think they'd want used underwear. Although I'm the type of person who would keep things for a LONG time if I still use them. As for my bras, I still have some from my High School days and the only time I've thrown them away is when they were damaged and had holes in them. When I was younger though I think my mom just threw my little training bras away. But hey, I guess if I find some that I really don't need and are in still good condition, then I donate it.

You're not alone. I still have some of my old bras from school. I should probably let go of them to a new home!

Thanks for posting this! I always donate my old bras or ones that no longer fit, if they're in decent condition. Our local battered women's shelter is always happy to have them.

That's a really good idea. I think I might contact our local shelter and ask them what kind of donations they're interested in. Thank you for sharing!

That's an interesting idea, and one that I wouldn't have thought of. Since we are so privilaged in some parts of the world, it's easy to forget sometimes, that people who have half as much will see abeautiul new thing in what we see as something that has been used up.

Recycling is a wider spread idea than we initially think of I suppose! It's lovely to pass things on.

Well as long as you're getting the full use out of them!

Well, this was an interesting story. Thanks for sharing it with us. I have never donated my old bras to a charity. I have always thrown them in the garbage. I never knew that they send them to poorer countries. I like this idea. I will now donate mine instead of throwing them away.
