Nightmares. What are they good for?

I can fully understand the reasons behind a lot of nightmares, but sometimes they seem to have no apparent explanation. Have you had them? How often do you experience them? Can you explain them? Does anyone know why our subconscience makes them so outrageous sometimes? I would really love to understand them better. If you can help in any way, please do. Thanks!

Sometimes I think that nightmares are warnings of things to come. On the other hand, they could simply be the way that the brain "practices" and it's just trying out various scenarios to see how it would cope. Surely we can't imagine that we'd ever be stalked by a ten foot tall lizard. But in our childhood days such irrational fears were most likely not uncommon. The asleep brain still deals in those kinds of fantasy scenarios and plays them out to see if survival would be possible. Perhaps that is what nightmares are. Simply, practice sessions for life!

I agree! We just have to figure out what those weird things are representing in our awake life. I had a dream once where I was being chased by something I could not see, but later turned into a giant rabbit on a horse. The rabbit turned into a man in a rabbit costume and he urged me to put on the costume and take the horse for my "getaway". Now, at the time, there were a lot of things going wrong in my life, and I suppose my subconscious was trying to help me find a way to "get away" from those problems, but why a rabbit costume??? LOL That's one I could never figure out. Maybe I felt like a trapped rabbit? I guess that could've been the meaning behind the "rabbit". I try not to read too much into dreams, although I've actually written a dream dictionary. A lot of the time, they are simply a belly ache that your brain turns into something very weird, incorporating things you've seen recently.

I think they are our subconscious sorting through the events of that are playing in our minds. I don't think there is a reason for them, but I do know under times of stress I have them a lot.

Dreams and nightmares are things that we are too scared or too dense to confront all by ourselves when we are conscious. It is all part of ourselves and which are stored in our subconscious. I call the subconscious the mental representation of our dna sequence which is the physical representations of our souls. Everything therefore has an explanation but these might be buried so deep inside our psyches as to be inaccessible until they happen. Take for instance something like finding a winning lottery ticket. We call it luck, I call it something which is long in coming. When you stub your toe and feel the pain we call it bad luck, I call it payback for some hurt done to someone else. Cheers!!

I used to have a lot of nightmares wen I was young and at one time it came to a point where I did not want to sleep anymore. This went on for a long time until I was 24 when I learned to meditate. In my very last nightmare, I was chased by a banshee where I would attempt to flee and the road turned to molasses and I could not go very fast. In my dreams one of my abilities was to fly and I tried doing it this time to no avail. Finally I thought of using my mantra as weapon so I turned to her instead of running away and I held her by the arms and screamed my mantra at her. She squirmed and tried to get away whereupon I screamed my mantra even louder. I eventually let her go and she flew away into the darkness where she came from and never bothered me again.
