How many of you crate train your puppy? and if you don't, do you not do it because you think it will have a negative effect on your pet. If you do I was also wondering what others do to encourage your puppy to stay inside the crate( other than slamming the door shut on them).

crate training is actually good because if you introduce your pup to a big place immediately it will be overwhelmed and may cower in fear thus giving a negative effect to your pups behavior in the future crate training will establish trust and respect between you and your pup and it'll be easier to potty train them because they won't dare mess up their sleeping place and will alert you if they want to pee or poop

I started crate-training mine right from the first day I got him. At first I moved him into it when he was sleepy so he got used to the idea that the crate was his place to sleep. Later on I trained him to go in on command, first by luring him in, giving a treat and let him back out. Sometimes I closed the door on him, gave a treat, then let him out. When he got used to that I left him in a few minutes before letting him back out, and gradually increasing the time in it. Nowadays it's his favorite place to be when no one is at home. We do close the door so he stays in it and isn't going anywhere else in the house but he knows that's where he's supposed to sleep so that's exactly what he does.

We have three dogs right now. And we've had them all since they were two-three months old. Two of them are still only seven months old. We've never crate trained any of our dogs, not even our past ones. It's not that we're afraid of a negative impacts, we just never thought about it. I mean it's bad enough our bird has to be in a cage. I don't think I'd ever do this to a dog. They best thing you could do is walk the puppy at night so it will get used to a schedule and sleep through the night.

I love crate trained dogs, and they love it, too! All of my dogs treated their crates like their beds, and they go in there to sleep, when they're scared, or just want some personal time. It's also great if you have a dog that's destructive and you want to limit their activities for periods of time. My girl has a blanket in the pan of hers, and she often carries toys in there to chew on. Whenever I've crate trained a dog, it started at night. I'd put the dog in the crate with a chew toy, shut the door, and go to sleep. I also started feeding them in there. There might be some whining at first, but it'll be all about the box once they get used to it. :)
