Ever trained a cat? I potty trained mine!

My friend Fred - Fred is a sweet cat. 15 years old.

I potty trained 2 of my cats before. It was nice not to have the litter box. One problem we had is that some of our guests are polite enough to close the toilet lid after they use it. Luckily we never had any accidents because of it. Also, we found that the toilet paper has to be put on the roll so that it rolls out from under the roll, otherwise, it all winds up on the floor as they instinctively try to cover their business!

I never trained it to use a toilet but my cat would come with a snap of the fingers, would sit when told and could get it to walk up right for treats

Super!! My bro-in-law didn't believe that my cat would roll over on command. My cat would come & plop himself down & lie down inthe middle of the floor and I'd say "roll over kitty" and move my hand in a circular motion in one direction, and he would. Then I'd make the circle in the other direction and say "go the other way", and he would! He would keep doing this about 5 times or so but then I guess he'd get bored with it and come sit by me to get me to stop it. I could do it even from 6 feet away & he'd still do it, so it wasn't because he was chasing my hand. I finally got a chance to show my bro-in-law and he conceeded quickly. My ex b/f one day said..."I used to think your cat was really strange. Now I see, he's just really smart!" Yes, dear, smarter than you. Hee!! Aloha!

I've heard about doing that on TV, but I've never actually met anyone who did it. Was it difficult? How long did it take? I'm afraid that my husband, the cat hater, would never use a toilet that a cat had been on, though. Plus my kitties are all getting too old to learn new tricks. But it's a thought for the future!

Wasn't difficult at all! I think it took a good couple to three weeks...and ALOT of patience! Don't forget, if it's the only bathroom in the house, you have to keep moving your litter tray back & forth off the toilet! Funny that your cat hater wouldn't be happy. He also wouldn't have to smell or step on cat litter, and they never dripped on the seat (as opposed to most men!). HEEEE! And one of my cats was about 9 yrs old when he learned, and he did fine. I just left "steps" up to the toilet cuz he didn't like to jump much. Granted with 2 cats you do have to keep an eye to make sure both are getting the hang of it. You may have 1 that does, and 1 that disagrees! Aloha!

When I got my first cat, Cleo, she was so intelligent and we used to play games like hide and seek and creeping up on each other. We had velux windows in the roof and she would spit bugs on my head to make me scream. Seriously! One day I was having a pee and she jumped up on the bidet next to the toilet, hunched over the front, like a person would sit and peed in it!!! It was so funny! When we had to keep her in for a while she would pee over the plughole in the bath. Not so hygienic but the best place for her (and us!) if she was stuck in the house and that house had no bidet. She is still clever now but is older and lazes around all day!

hmm my family has been having cats since i was quite little and there is no such rules of how to train a cat,or at least from what i experienced with mine..cats are not like dogs, they have their own personality so every cat is different..some are lazy some are active some are very smart and proud, some are listening..all i know is that male cats will always pee in the house when they have their periode because that is what males do..they mark their teritory so it doesn't really matter that they have their sand to pee on,when periode comes they will mark the house too hehe..as for the female cat it is usually not that hard to teach her to pee in the right place,it is good to watch her carefully and see what place she chooses to do her needs and place a sand plate there..and hope she will go..if you want to make a special place for her only in the bathroom then you have to spends days and days taking her there when you notice she is going round the house searching for a spot..and you don't let her leave the bathroom till she peed where she is supposed to..that is what we did with all our cats and it worked:)

Trust me, I've had several cats all my life also, and only at that time did I try to potty train them. Without any problems, I had 2 cats that were using the toilet! Granted, some will take to it and others won't, but you can't say that it's impossible until you've tried it, and I HAVE done it and seen video of other cats doing it. I'll see if I can get a video somewhere and post it along with this. It is, at least, quite amusing! It was surprisingly easy, too. I mean, cats are smart, and they appreciate a clean place to do their business. Now, male cats spraying is a whole different situation. That isn't peeing, that is marking territory and it is not associated with urination. Both of the cats I trained were male. They were, however, fixed and didn't spray (although fixing doesn't neccessarily guarantee that a cat will not spray, but it is unlikely). All cats will prefer to use a litter box because it is their nature to be very clean and be able to cover their business. Therefore, when we get a cat, any age, you put the litter box in the bathroom, put the cat in the litter box & close the door. You're right, this is how they learn to remember that that's where the box is. It's usually not more than a couple of days since it is natural for them. And the bathroom is the best place hygienically for it anyways. So as far as hygiene, potty training was just the next step! Given the choice of litter box or no, I'll get rid of the box! And it's funny because your guests, once they realize that you have a cat but no box odor, they've just GOT to see your cat doing his business!! Poor cats, no privacy!! Aloha!

Okay all you mamma kitties...here's the trick. It's not a quick learn thing, and it will be a bit cumbersome unless you have more than 1 bathroom. How long it takes will depend on your baby. If he's ok with you moving things along a little quicker than I show, go for it. If he gets fussy with it (and maybe even starts to go elsewhere) then slow down to give him time to adjust & get used to each move. 1) Put the litter box next to the toilet and let them get used to it's new location. 2) Put 1 to 2 inches (5 - 8 cm) of newspaper under the box. Baby will learn to step up to the box. 3) Every 2 - 3 days, add another 1 - 1 1/2 inches of newspaper under the box. If you like, you can put another equal stack of newspaper next to or in front of the box so baby has a solid landing surface to jump to and doesn't pull the box off of the stack. (at this point, it's good to have a litter box that is sort of shallow) I had enough room to put the box between the tub & the toilet so my babies preferred to jump to the tub & then stepped down to the box. 4) When the box is level with the toilet seat, move the box 1/4 way onto the seat, again for 2 - 3 days. Repeating by 1/4 increments until the box is directly on the seat. 5) REPLACE THE BOX with a piece of cardboard, and put a modest amount of litter in the middle of the cardboard. By the way, I found that the lid to a pizza box works great because it has very low edges to help keep the litter INSIDE, but it's not obstructive to being on the seat. We're trying to take away the litter "box" feel at this point. 6) After a couple of days, put a hole approx 2 inches wide in the middle of the cardboard, with some litter around the hole. This gets baby used to seeing/smelling the water at his toilet site. 7) Every couple of days, make this hole a little bigger (you can decide how much). By the time that the hole is 7 - 8 inches across, you can stop putting litter at the edges because there's really not much room left anyways. 8) You can take the cardboard away when you see that baby is making his deposits through the hole. I put a new toilet seat on that was a very flat & level surface. You know how some seats are contoured and sort of slope inwards? I just thought that it would be more comfortable for them. As cats naturally scratch around to cover their business, you can try to hang something from the flush handle to try to get them to sratch there and thereby flushing the toilet. I've seen that done, but I never tried it. Depends on how much pressure yours takes to flush, I guess. As I stated above, be sure to put your toiletpaper roll so that it dispenses from the underside. As mine scratched to cover their business, I came home to a whole roll of paper rolled out onto the floor (it keeps spinning and they keep scratching). I do encourage you to take your time in this training. Since cats can be finicky or temperamental, we don't want to upset them trying to do this too quickly! Good luck training your babies! If you remember, let me know how you did! Any questions, post them here and I'll try to keep an eye out for it. Aloha!

Also, I might add, that of course since all cats, like people, are different and they may or may not take to it. So, if you have more than one cat, be sure to pay attention to both of them in case one does and one doesn't.

OK kids, youtube has alot of cat potty vids on it. But I kinda like this site because it has better videos on it. They're selling a training product, but my instructions above don't cost anything! Heck, you can collect newspapers from your neighbors for free! Aloha!!! http://www.kittygoespotty.com/videos.php

You may still be able to train your baby. Just take your time with the moves and if she doesn't like to jump, leave "steps" of newspaper/magazines so she can make her way up gently! I did eventually leave a stack next to the toilet because one of mine just preferred to step up. Now that I think about it, he was about 9 yrs also! Just pay mind to her. She'll let you know if she doesn't like it. Good luck. Aloha!

LOL!! Poor thing! (You AND your cat!) Have you tried shutting him in the room (preferrably bathroom) with the litter box and putting him in it whenever you go in there? It's natural for them, so usually a cat will take to it within just a few short days. Too funny, though. Check out the link posted at the bottom of reply #2. Aloha!!

That's awesome. I've gotta try it and I think I can get my cat Orion to do it. I love cats but the litter box is defintely the worst thing about them. If I can get rid of that, my life would be perfect. You rock. Hey check out www.pimppets.com and let me know what you think. You may have made my life a lot better. Thanks.

Giggles... I had trained some to use a hole in the ground in an outdoor pretend toilet with a toilet seat years ago... Well, accept for one. I gotta share this story.. My Dad went inside to use the bathroom after mowing part of the lawn, well out Male Cat Rupual Decided he had to go too, and he jumped up onto the lawmower seat. I and the three children were talking and suddenly we noticed Rupaul in his pose as he took a good sized dump, and We were all looking at eachother as we asked how do we clean that off of that Vinyl seat? .. Well two of them took off indoors for the paper towels, Dad had the mower still running, So it was loud and he could not hear us, as we all waved at him telling him not to sit down yet, as we ran up to him with paper towels... Dad not hearing us. Sat right in it and mowed our lawn, my sisters, lawn, and my Grandpas lawn, he came home and stood up, and he said woe something stinks, then he looked down, and said Jeeeeeesus! I think I must have crapped my pants, I must be heat stroking again! and by this time we are all laughing and crying so hard we could not tell Dad that the cat did it, until the next day when we saw him sniffing the lawn mower seat, and the two young children were giggling. I said Dad come here you gotta look at this. Remember what happened yesterday? We tried to tell you! Look! And that is when Dad saw Rupaul using the Lawn Mower seat... So dad got a new law mower seat put the old one at back to Dads relief the cat kept using the old seat and left the new one alone lol... I guess it is a good thing that Rupaul was an outdoor Cat :) ... He lived to be 9 then caught a bad sinus virus and passed that way... - DNatureofDTrain.
