Has anyone married a foreigner?

I am engaged to marry a German citizen. I really don't want to have to be separated for ages while we are waiting for visas and such. Does anyone have experience marrying a foreigner? What is the quickest easiest way to do this?? I can't bare the thought of being separated for 18 months!
