My Dream - A Cat Orphanage

Little Mamma - She is a feral cat whom I have been feeding for about three years now. She will come close to me but still is cautious and will not let me get close enough to pet her. There are a few ferals where she lives that will let me pet them, though. It is better not to socialize them too much, though, if they are going to stay outdoors where they are and have to protect themselves.

I have this dream but I need ideas on how to achieve my goal. This is my first post on myLot. I am currently doing TNR - trap, neuter/spay and release of as many feral cats as I can. There are so many homeless cats that turn into feral cats (unsocialized, afraid of people) that is is a constant battle. All it takes is a male and female to multiply and then things get out of control really fast, like a wild fire. Since I love cats so much, my dream is to buy property and build a sanctuary (or orphanage) to take in as many homeless cats as possible. I would like the money to start a place like Best Friends in Utah, only I would specialize in cats. I would have volunteers or paid personnel help me take care of them, a vet or two on hand to spay/neuter and lots of comfortable places for the kitties to hang out and be happy. I am trying to gain money by doing little things like lottery tickets, surveys and click websites on line, recycling, etc. I have a long way to go but like many before me.... I have a dream..... I would like serious suggestions from anyone on how to earn money. I have a job but I can never save enough from that job to get anywhere. I don't have a lot of extra money to risk in the stock market, etc. Please email me if you have any honest, legitimate and no-cash expenditure ideas. I am really serious about this. Thanks, Carolyn

hi there momiecat we've got the same dream. i would love to run a cattery for homeless cats. my country is not exactly stray friendly. just one call from an annoyed residence is enough to send the pest busters running. it's really heart wrenching to see the stray cats being killed just because they are stray cats. i wish i will have the ability to set up a no-kill shelter where all the stray cats can live. i'm sorry i have no good idea to help you along. i do wish you all the best in reaching your goal. i'll be praying for you.

I am so glad to hear that there are more people out there who share my dream. We are constantly coming across people who do not like cats and it can be so discouraging. Good luck to you too in reaching your goal. May be if we post enough on myLot we will be closer to reaching that goal. Thank you for caring!

Hi there, I am so glad that we share the same passion. I am very determined to realize this dream. I do not know how I am going to do it but eventually I will. There is a wonderful organization in Kanab, Utah (you probably have heard about it) called "Best Friends". I would like to pattern my orphanage on their idea although specialize in cats/kittens only. As you know, there are so many neglected animals out there today. Just in Southern California alone, I hear of so many feral colonies and kittens every day. Rescue and TNR groups are constantly battling the overflow of homeless kitties. I have to accomplish my goal. I know there are a lot of dedicated people out there doing their best. We all have to try harder to do our part to combat this tragic situation. It may take me a lifetime but I really want to do this. Thanks for your encouraging words.

I realize this post is a month old and you're having your major heavy duty problems ( putting it mildly) with what is happening with your feral cats. Your idea is ideal...and I hope you go for it and can establish a real sanctuary type place. Did you know there are certain programs and grants to try for that are just for pet rescuers? You would probably have to write grant proposals including budget plans and so forth...I've been after grants but for my photo work. The thing is grants you don't have to pay back... here are a few sites to look at http://www.animalsheltering.org/programs_and_services/financial_assistance/ http://grants.library.wisc.edu/organizations/animals.html
