My mom's dog passed away, and she wants to get a new dog for the kids. I wanted to know what the best kind of dog is with young kids?

If you prefer small dogs then may I suggest a Brussels Griffon. They are SO SWEET. (See my pic?) That is a smooth coat they also have the rough coats. Either way they are SO easy to train and VERY smart. Other wise if you like big dogs may I suggest a Labrador or a German Sheperd. Good Luck!!

I really believe that labs are really great family pets. and their so much fun to own. we had a lab who was the best pet ever, he LOVED playing ball and would run after that thing no matter how many times you threw it or how tired he was. he just was happy to play. he also LOVED swimming, we'd go fishing and swimming and take him along and he'd have a blast. the kids would play with him forever and he'd never do anything wrong in any way. our littlest son would climb on him, pull his ears and there were times we wouldn't be able to get him off right away, but he didn't mind at all. he would let my son sit on his back and everything. I think they truly are the very best dogs for a family with kids.

Labs or Boxers are noted for being good with kids. Avoid Collies unless you specifically know the dog lived with children as a pup in the crucial socialisation period before leaving its dam and litter mates. all the best urban

I'd say it depends on what kind of life she can offer a dog. There's a lot to consider when getting one, like what kind of exercise she can provide, how much shedding she can tolerate, grooming, what type of housing she lives in (considering possible breed bans and size restrictions, I've seen some places ban dogs like golden retrievers and poodles...), etc. So there's more to consider than just needing a dog that's good with kids.

When I was young, we had a Cocker Spaniel. That dog was just incredible! They are extremely intelligent, loyal, affectionate, very gentle and great watchdogs! There used to be a time when the "gas man" (meter reader) would just come into the house to read our gas meter. We left a key for him that only he knew about and he would let himself in if no one was at home. It was a good thing my mother worked right down the street, because she came home at lunch time to find the meter reader pleading for help. Our dog had let him come in the house and go down to the basement where the meter was, but he would not let this poor man back upstairs! He was standing at the top of the stairs, growling at this man whenever he would try to get upstairs. Yes, they are wonderful watchdogs. And they generally will tolerate a great deal of ear and tail pulling by small kids.

I've had three black labs, and now a chiwawa and a rat terrier. I would say rat terrier a hyper lap dog-LOL or black labs. My black labs ranged from 75 lbs. on up. Eats a lot rat terrier at three years old only 12 lbs. Eats very little very loyal dog. hyper when going for a walk, lays on lap when you sit. willing to jump over couch onto your shoulder for attention. chiwawa- not for kids in my opinion, I have two teens. they frighten easy
