New generation of surgery...have a robot do it

A new surgical tool has been used in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The surgeon can sit across the room and control the surgical precision of this new robot that performs laparoscopic surgery. "The robot, first designed by NASA, allows complex surgeries to be performed through smaller incisions, which means less pain and quicker recovery." This sounds pretty sci-fi but cool. The article didn't say, but I'll bet it costs a pretty penny! http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/health/16598608/detail.html

It sounds like it has lots of potential. We keep hearing that surgery is delicate, and critical. What could be better than to have a precision instrument performing it? I would go for it, if I needed it.

It is amazing, and a little scary. We now have to worry about 2 things making mistakes or doing the wrong thing. It is very expensive also, I am sure.

I have seen some of these surgeries on the net or tv. They are really interesting cause the robot can do the surgery in less time and with more steady moves than a human can. This has been in the works for years now. I have no idea what it costs but I would hope that at some point it would make surgery quicker, easier, and cheaper for the patient.

It probably is expensive. It seems interesting though, how surgeons can just sit across the room and control the robot to do the surgery. Is it only laparoscopic surgery? Thats kind of cool, to some extent...
